Neighbor Harassment in Apartments

How to Deal With Neighbor Harassment in Apartments

Having a problem with someone who lives next door that you are forced to see almost daily can be stressful and disturbing. If you are having problems with your neighbor and you can attest that it is a form of harassment, you are entitled to every right to protect yourself from them.

How to Identify Harassment

Harassment is considered consistent, deliberate behavior. Neighbors who throw one noisy party or who unintentionally leave garbage unattended in the common area is not harassment. However, if they repeatedly misbehave and establish a pattern of inappropriate behavior that causes alarm or distress, it may be harassment. Here are some actions that might be considered harassment:

  • They deliberately do things that bother or target your pet.

  • They play music at an unreasonable volume at unreasonable times. When asked to stop, they still play it or play it even louder.

  • They address you with unwanted sexual remarks.

  • They threaten you and your loved ones with physical harm or violence or intimidate you in an attempt to get you to move.

What to do if Your Neighbor is Harassing You?

Initially, talking with your neighbor to resolve conflicts is a good step. However, if your neighbor is harassing you with sexual language or is threatening violence, you may not feel comfortable doing so, and it may not be safe to do so. If this is the case, make sure you notify your landlord and pressure them to take action to stop the harassment.

Finally, do all you can to document their actions. By compiling evidence against your neighbor, you’ll be able to present a stronger case to your landlord or a court.
